Hike SoCal

UPCOMING BIKE RIDE

WHEN: Saturday October 11, meeting at 8:30 am (at the specific Liberty Station parking lot indicated below).

WHERE: We will meet at the small tree-covered parking lot near Farragut Road and Cushing Road in Liberty Station. It is about a 30-minute drive to Liberty Station from Eastlake Church. There are various routes to Liberty Station, most of them will eventually have you on the I-5 North. When on the I-5 North, continue past the 94 and the 163 and get off the freeway at Pacific Highway (exit 18A); once on Pacific Highway, get into the left lane and make a slight left onto Barnett Avenue at the signal. Stay on Barnett for about 0.7 miles and turn left at the signal onto Truxtun Road. Shortly after turning onto Truxtun, you will turn right to stay on Truxtun; take it about 0.4 miles to Dewey Road, where you will turn left. Continue on Dewey for 0.2 miles and turn right onto Cushing Road. Continue on Cushing for a half mile, and turn left onto Farragut Road, and the parking lot will be on your left.

ABOUT THE RIDE:We will ride our bikes to the Japanese Friendship Bell at the end of Shelter Island. The total ride is less than six miles round trip and virtually all flat. We will be on streets (portions of it with designated bike lanes), so we will ride single file. Although not required for adults, I always encourage the use of a bike helmet.

IMPORTANT GENERAL INFORMATION

Hiking in natural areas can present a variety of potential hazards, starting with uneven terrain, loose gravel, and obstacles on trails that can result in slips/trips/falls. Conditions on hikes can also potentially lead to dermatitis from poison oak, heat illness, snake bites, and insect stings or bites.

Always take appropriate precautions and come prepared for the hike. Wear solid footwear with good tread and clothing to fit the weather. Apply sunscreen as needed and bring plenty of water, a minimum of one quart. For cool weather, layer your clothing so you are warm enough but can take off outer layers if you get warm.

PREVIOUS HIKE

On Saturday September 20 we hiked Oak Canyon in Mission Trails Regional Park. The morning was overcast but turned into beautiful blue skies as we hiked.
